1818‐66 A socialist and journalist during the German revolution of 1848. After retiring from the Prussian army, he worked on editing a true socialist magazine and became friends with Marx and Engels. During the revolution, he organized the Westphalian Democratic Association and the Workers' Association, and edited the democratic Neue Deutsche Zeitung. After the revolution, he tried to rebuild the Communist League, but defected to America in 1851. As one of the few Marxists, he worked hard to develop the American labor movement.
