A socialist and journalist during the German revolution of 1848. After retiring from the Prussian army, he worked on editing a true socialist magazine and became friends with Marx and Engels. During the revolution, he organized the Westphalian Democratic Association and the Workers' Association, and edited the democratic Neue Deutsche Zeitung. After the revolution, he tried to rebuild the Communist League, but defected to America in 1851. As one of the few Marxists, he worked hard to develop the American labor movement. [Kawagoe Osamu]

ドイツの1848年革命期の社会主義者，ジャーナリスト。プロイセン将校を退官後，真正社会主義系の雑誌編集に携わるとともに，マルクス，エンゲルスと親交を結ぶ。革命時にはウェストファーレンの民主主義協会，労働者協会を組織し，民主派の《新ドイツ新聞》を編集。革命後は共産主義者同盟の再建に努めるが，1851年アメリカに亡命。数少ないマルクス派としてアメリカ労働運動の発展に力を尽くした。【川越修】
