Naobi no Mitama

Norinaga Motoori's treatise on ancient ways. One volume. The manuscript ("Chokurei") was completed in 1771 (Meiwa 8), and was later included in the first volume of his major work, "Kojikiden," as a part of the general theory. Along with Kamo no Mabuchi's "Kunioiko," this is a representative work of restoration Shinto (Kogaku Shinto). He argues that ancient Japan was an ideal world where peace and the full flowering of humanity were realized, and that this was brought about by the way of life of ancient people who believed in the will of the gods and followed the rule of successive emperors whose ancestor was the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, and that this ancient way of life was true Shinto. In contrast, he vehemently rejects Confucianism and Buddhism, claiming that they are merely products of humans with their limited wisdom, and that they are not only contrary to human feelings but also distort human nature.

本居宣長(もとおりのりなが)の古道論書。一巻。1771年（明和8）稿本（『直霊』）が成り、のち彼の主著『古事記伝』の総論の一部としてその第一巻に収められた。賀茂真淵(かもまぶち)の『国意考』と並んで復古神道（古学神道）を代表する書である。日本の古代こそが平和と人間性の完全な開花が実現した理想世界であり、それは神々の計らいを信じ、日神天照大神(あまてらすおおみかみ)を祖神とする代々の天皇の統治に随順した古代人の生き方によってもたらされたものであるとし、この古代人の姿こそが真の神道であると説く。それに対して、儒教や仏教は人間がその限りある知恵をもってつくりだしたものにすぎず、人情に反するばかりか、人間の本性をもゆがめてしまうとして激しくこれを排斥している。
