Circular peeling - Kanjojohi

Japanese: 環状除皮 - かんじょうじょひ

...A shallow cut is made in the trunk or thick branch of a fruit or flowering tree, 1/10 to 1/20 of the diameter of the tree, and the bark is removed in a circular pattern. This is also called annular barking. Some of the carbohydrates assimilated in the leaves are translocated through the phloem to the trunk and roots, but when the phloem is removed by annular barking, this translocation is hindered, and the concentration of carbohydrates increases above the barked area, making it easier for adventitious roots to develop.
