The fourth king of the 4th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt (c. 2613-c. 2494 BC). King during the construction of the Great Pyramid. Son of Khufu, he succeeded the short reign of his brother Dedefre. Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure built three pyramids at Giza, of which the second pyramid is his. In addition to the main pyramid, which stands at 136.5m high, the mortuary temple, the approach, the watershed temple, and other auxiliary facilities are relatively well preserved. The face of the famous Great Sphinx is thought to have been modeled after his face. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, his name was Khephren, and according to the ancient Egyptian historian Manetho, he was a Sufi. The seated statue of the king at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is full of elegance and dignity, and is a masterpiece of Egyptian sculpture.
