Zangi Dynasty - Zangi-cho (English spelling) Zangī

A Turkish Islamic dynasty (1127-1222) that ruled from northern Iraq to northern Syria. It was founded by Imad ad-din Zengi (reigned 1127-46). In 1127, Zengi was appointed governor of Mosul by Sultan Mahmud of Sultanate and was given the title of Athar Beg. Zengi took advantage of the political turmoil in the western Seljuk Empire to expand his power, expanding his territory to Sinjar, Jazira, Harran, Aleppo, and Hama. In 44, he captured Edessa from the Crusaders, but after his death, the empire was divided between his two sons, with Syria ruled by Nur ad-din and Jazira by Saif ad-din Ghazi. Nur ad-Din captured Damascus in 54 and planned to attack the Crusaders from both Syria and Egypt, but after the Ayyubid dynasty was established in Egypt, his territory was gradually encroached upon by Saladin, and after his death, Syria came under the control of the Mosul regime again. In 1222, the vizier Badr ad-Din Lul became Athar Beg of Mosul, and the dynasty came to an end.
