A city facing Karatsu Bay in northwestern Saga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1932. The central city, located at the mouth of the Matsuura River, is a castle town from the early modern period. Karatsu Port, known as Karanotsu, was an old port of entry to the continent. It became a special export port in 1889 and an open port in 1899, and flourished as a coal shipping port for the Karatsu coalfields. The Karatsu Line and Chikuhi Line run through the city, and fishing, marine and agricultural product processing are thriving. Thermal power plants and machinery factories are located in the coastal area, and a marine product processing complex is located there. In addition to rice, mandarin oranges, electric chrysanthemums, and strawberries are also cultivated. Karatsu ware is a specialty of the city. The Karatsu Shrine autumn festival, Karatsu Kunchi, is famous. The coastal area, which includes Niji no Matsubara (a special place of scenic beauty), Mount Hirefuri, and the sea cave Nanatsukama (a natural monument), is part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park. In January 2005, the towns of Hamatama, Iki, Ochi, Hizen, Chinzei, Yobuko, and Kitahata in Higashi Matsuura County were incorporated, and in January 2006, the village of Nanayama in Higashi Matsuura County was incorporated. 佐賀県北西部，唐津湾に面する市。1932年市制。松浦川河口部にある中心市街は近世の城下町。唐津港は唐の津と呼ばれた古くからの大陸渡航地で，1889年特別輸出港，1899年開港場となり，唐津炭田の石炭積出港として栄えた。唐津線，筑肥線が通じ，漁業，水産・農産物加工が盛んで，臨海部には火力発電所や機械工場が立地し，水産加工団地がある。米作のほかミカン，電照ギク，イチゴ栽培も行われる。唐津焼を特産。唐津神社秋祭の唐津くんちは有名。虹ノ松原（特別名勝），領巾振(ひれふり)山，海食洞の七ッ釜（天然記念物）などがある海岸部一帯は玄海国定公園に属する。2005年１月東松浦郡浜玉町，厳木町，相知町，肥前町，鎮西町，呼子町，北波多村を，2006年１月東松浦郡七山村を編入。487.58km²。12万6926人（2010）。
