Workers' Education Association (English: Arbeiterbildungsverein) [Germany]

Along with craftsmen's associations and workers' associations, these were workers' organizations that marked the early stage of the labor movement and were formed throughout Western Europe in the mid-19th century. Their goals varied considerably from region to region, but broadly speaking they had two: (1) to provide literacy, arithmetic, and general education, which workers often lacked at the time, and (2) to educate workers politically through reading, discussion, and other means. Depending on which of these goals was emphasized, workers' education associations can be broadly divided into two types: a kind of social organization with a strong non-political color, and an openly active organization of a revolutionary association.

手工業者協会，労働者協会とならんで19世紀中葉の西欧各地に結成された労働運動の初期段階を画する労働者組織。その掲げる目標は各地域ごとにかなり異なっていたが，大まかにいうと次の二つであった。(1)当時の労働者にしばしば欠如していた読み書き計算の知識，一般的教養を授けること，(2)それと同時に読書，討論等により労働者を政治的に教育すること。これらの目標のいずれが強調されるかによって，労働者教育協会は，非政治的色彩の強い一種の親睦団体と，非公然の革命結社の公然活動団体に大別される。
