French philosopher. Born in Fontainebleau. Professor at the École Normale Supérieure. He received his doctorate for his book On the Foundations of Induction (1871). Influenced by Maine de Biran, Rabesson-Moriand, and Kant, he developed idealistic and critical idealism. His central theme was what conditions must be met for the existence of the world as it appears in experience, and how the world can become an object of contemplation. He attempted to fuse mechanism and teleology from the standpoint that the ultimate basis of all existence is the absolute spontaneity of the human mind. His lectures had a profound influence on many brilliant thinkers, including Bouteloup and Bergson. His other works include Psychology and Metaphysics (1885).
