It is a national university corporation. Its predecessor was Nara Women's Higher Normal School, founded in 1908 (Meiji 41). Until the Second World War, together with Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School to the east, it played a central role in training female teachers for women's normal schools and girls' high schools. After the war, it became a new national university in 1949 (Showa 24) consisting of the Faculty of Literature and the Faculty of Science and Home Economics, as a women's university that did not have the direct purpose of training female secondary school teachers. In 1953, the Faculty of Science and Home Economics was separated and reorganized into the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Home Economics, making it three faculties. In 1993 (Heisei 5), the Faculty of Home Economics was reorganized as the Faculty of Life and Environment. In addition to the three master's courses (Literature, Science, and Life and Environment), the Graduate School of Human Culture (Comparative Cultural Studies, Life and Environment Studies) was established in 1981, consisting of only doctoral courses (three years). Since then, after undergoing several reorganizations, as of 2010, the graduate school has been consolidated into the Graduate School of Humanities, with 16 majors including International Social and Cultural Studies, Language and Culture Studies, Social and Environmental Studies, and Information Science. In April 2004, with the enforcement of the National University Corporation Law, the university became a National University Corporation. Its headquarters are located in Kitauoya Higashicho, Nara City.
