A Shingon Buddhist monk in the late Heian period. The fourth son of Emperor Sanjo. He became a disciple of Saishin (954-1030) of Ninnaji Temple, learned all the teachings, and became the second abbot of Ninnaji Temple. In 1059 (Kohei 2), he ascended to Mount Koya and prayed for the construction of Kanjoin Temple, performing goma (ceremonial fire) rituals for over 800 days. He performed countless rituals such as the Peacock Sutra and Yakushi for people connected to him, including the Imperial family, and his treatments were extremely effective in curing illnesses and eradicating suffering. People came to believe in him and even revered him as if he were the reincarnation of Kobo Daishi Kukai. He greatly promoted the teachings of the Hirosawa school, one of the two schools of To-mitsu Buddhism, and had many disciples. Among them, Kanjo became the successor.
