Checkered pattern - Ichimatsumoyo
A checkerboard pattern of alternating black and white, black and red, etc. It has been used since ancient times in clothing, crafts, and architecture. It was originally called ishidatami (stone pavement), but in 1741, the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu used it for the pattern on his stage costume, and it came to be called ichimatsu.

碁盤の目形に黒と白,黒と赤などの入れ違いを配列した模様。古くから服飾品をはじめ工芸品や建築に応用される。もとは石畳と称したが,1741年に歌舞伎役者佐野川市松が舞台衣装の袴(はかま)の模様に用いて以来,市松と呼ばれるようになった。
