Mud worm (Synchaeta stylata)

Japanese: ドロワムシ(泥輪虫) - ドロワムシ(英語表記)Synchaeta stylata
Mud worm (Synchaeta stylata)
A rotifer of the family Rotifidae. It is commonly found as plankton in lakes and ponds, but also appears in brackish waters. It is common in summer. It has an inverted cone shape with a body length of 0.2 to 0.3 mm, which is slightly wider in the middle and tapers toward the rear. The head is bulging in the center, with a pair of setae on both ends, and a pair of dark red eyespots in between. There are ear-like protrusions below the setae, and the cilia on these parts hang down. The lateral tentacles are located in the rear third of the body. The distinction between the body and legs is unclear, and the legs gradually taper into two small toes at the end.
