…In the great fire of 1657 (Meireki 3), Edo Castle was burned down, and 930,000 ryo and 67,000 koku of rice were spent on rebuilding the main citadel. There were also loans and grants from the daimyo, hatamoto, and Edo townspeople, but 1,030,000 ryo were sent to Edo from Sunpu and Osaka, and the 3,840,000 ryo of gold and silver in the castle tower was not touched. However, there were loans and grants of rice from Kofu, Tatebayashi, and the Owari family, and in 1676 (Enpo 4), there was a shortage of 200,000 ryo, and they began to use the emergency gold and silver coppers and inner gold storehouse that had been in place since Ieyasu. The amount of gold and silver mined had dropped sharply after the Kan'ei era due to technical limitations, and trade was also sluggish, but the increase in expenses was due to the hiring of new hatamoto children and the creation of official salaries. …

...the currency storage and disbursement agency of the Edo Shogunate and various feudal domains. The Shogunate's treasuries were located in the castles of Edo, Osaka, Nijo, Sunpu, and Kofu, and on Sado, but the most important ones were the Oku-kanzō and Hasuike-kanzō in Edo, and the Osaka treasury. The Oku-kanzō was apparently originally a cavernous storehouse beneath the castle tower, but it was destroyed in the Meireki fire (1657), and is thought to have been located beneath the castle tower afterwards. It stored emergency funds, gold, silver, and coppers.

…江戸幕府および諸藩における貨幣の貯蔵ならびに出納機関。幕府の金蔵は江戸，大坂，二条，駿府，甲府の各城内と佐渡に所在したが，最も重要なものは江戸の奥金蔵･蓮池金蔵と大坂金蔵であった。奥金蔵は古くは城内天守閣下の穴蔵であったらしいが，明暦大火(1657)に焼失し，その後やはり天守台下にあったと思われ，非常用の除金（よけきん）や金銀分銅などを貯蔵した。…
