Shiro Murano

Poet. Born in Tokyo on October 7, 1901. Graduated from Keio University. In middle school, he submitted haiku and other works to the Bunsho Club. Before graduating from university, he founded the magazines Earth Spirit and Poetry Age. In 1926 (Taisho 15), he participated in the second edition of Torch, which was led by Kawaji Ryuko and others. He published the poetry collection Wana (Trap) (1926). In 1929, he founded Kigyo (Flagfish). In 1931, he contributed to Bungaku. In 1934, he became a member of the editorial staff of Shiho along with Haruyama Yukio, Anzai Fuyue, Takenaka Iku, and Kondo Azuma. In 1937, he became a member of the editorial staff of Shinryoku (New Territory). His 1939 collection of poems, "Gymnastics Poems," was highly praised for its experimental construction of modern lyricism in the style of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). In 1942, he published the poetry collection "Lyrical Flight." After the war, he participated in "Modern Poetry" (1948) and other publications. He served as secretary-general and president of the Japan Association of Modern Poets several times. "The Santantaru Anglerfish" is his signature work. He introduced Neue Sachlichkeit, and had an existential style of poetry. He won the Yomiuri Literature Prize for his poetry collection, "Record of the Lost Sheep" (1959). He also wrote many introductory books. He passed away on March 2, 1975. Since his death, a memorial service for his lost sheep has been held every March.

詩人。明治34年10月7日、東京に生まれる。慶応義塾大学卒業。中学時代は『文章倶楽部(くらぶ)』に俳句など投稿。大学卒業前に『地霊』『詩篇(しへん)時代』を創刊。1926年(大正15)に川路柳虹(かわじりゅうこう)らの第二次『炬火(たいまつ)』に参加。詩集『罠(わな)』(1926)出版。29年に『旗魚(きぎょ)』創刊。31年には『文学』に寄稿。34年、春山行夫、安西冬衛(あんざいふゆえ)、竹中郁(いく)、近藤東(あずま)らと『詩法』編集同人。37年に『新領土』編集同人。39年の『体操詩集』はノイエ・ザハリヒカイト(新即物主義)による現代の叙情を実験的に構築しえたものとして高く評価された。42年に詩集『抒情(じょじょう)飛行』出版。戦後は『現代詩』(1948)などに参加。日本現代詩人会の幹事長、会長を数回務める。「さんたんたる鮟鱇(あんこう)」は代表作。ノイエ・ザハリヒカイトの紹介者で、実存的な詩風をもつ。詩集『亡羊記(ぼうようき)』(1959)で読売文学賞受賞。入門書の著作も多い。昭和50年3月2日没。没後、毎年3月に亡羊忌が営まれている。
