Born: May 3, 1874 in Stockholm [Died] March 9, 1954. Gostad. Swedish oceanographer. His father, Frederik, was also an oceanographer. He began studying ocean currents while studying at Uppsala University, and showed that they could be explained by the Earth's rotation. He joined the International Oceanographic Institute in Oslo (1902), where he invented an ocean current meter (the Ekman-Mertz current meter) and a water sampler. He became a professor at Lund University (10). In 1925, he joined the German expedition to the Canary Islands. In addition to establishing the basic theory of ocean currents based on many observations and experiments, he is also known for his research on the effects of wind and coastal topography on ocean currents, and the concentration and compressibility of seawater.
