Cowes

A town in the northern part of the Isle of Wight, southern England, UK. It is the main port of the Isle of Wight in the English Channel off the coast of Hampshire, and is located at the mouth of the Medina River. Industries such as shipbuilding, aircraft, and marine equipment are located here. Cowes Castle, built by Henry VIII in 1540, is home to the castle, and since the headquarters of the Royal Yacht Club was established there in 1856, it has become the center of yachting in the UK, and the yacht race held every year in early August is internationally famous. Population: 9,663 (2001).
