A city in the northern part of Paraná state in southern Brazil. The central settlement is about 300 km northwest of the state capital, Curitiba. It was founded in 1930 by Japanese and German immigrants and rapidly developed as the center of the coffee-growing region. It is home to a large instant coffee factory, and is also active in the processing of agricultural and livestock products such as coffee, cotton, rice, and fruit, as well as papermaking and distilled liquor production. A railway line runs from São Paulo, about 450 km to the east, and the city is connected to the state capital by a major road. Population: 378,903 (1990 estimate).
