A terrestrial orchid of the Orchidaceae family found in the grasslands of low mountains in Japan. It has a strong fragrance. The rhizomes and tuberous roots are not very thick and run horizontally. The stems are somewhat tall for this genus, 35-60 cm. There are 5-7 leaves arranged alternately. The lower 4-6 leaves are roughly the same size, elliptical, and 10-16 cm long. In May and June, it produces 10 or so milky white flowers that are somewhat densely packed together. Each flower is about 1.5 cm in diameter. The dorsal sepals and petals are helmet-shaped. The lateral sepals open backwards and the lip petals hang down. There is a relatively long spur, 3-4 cm long. It is distributed throughout Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as in China and Nepal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
