This method of growing plants involves rooting them in sand instead of soil and providing them with the inorganic nutrients they need to grow in the form of water. It is also called sand cultivation and is a type of hydroponic culture. Vegetables and other crops are sometimes grown using sand cultivation in deserts and coastal dunes. Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates is particularly well known for building polyethylene greenhouses on the coast and cultivating a variety of vegetables in sand using desalinated seawater. The facilities required for sand cultivation are only a bed of well-drained sand and an automatic irrigation system, and compared to other hydroponic methods, the cost of construction is lower.
