1792‐1853 Mexican politician and historian. After studying mineralogy, he traveled to Spain in 1814 and furthered his field of expertise in Germany and France. In Spain, he published a book on the process and causes of the decline of Mexico's mining industry, which had a major impact on the industrial recovery of independent Mexico. After studying abroad in England, he founded the Agricultural and Pastoral Bank in Mexico. From 1823, as Minister of the Interior and Foreign Affairs, he established the National Archives and National Museum, and built a foundation for education and literature. In the 1830s, he persistently represented the national interest in drawing the border between the United States and Mexico, and strengthened friendly relations with Latin American countries in order to counter the United States.
