Mexican politician and historian. After studying mineralogy, he traveled to Spain in 1814 and furthered his field of expertise in Germany and France. In Spain, he published a book on the process and causes of the decline of Mexico's mining industry, which had a major impact on the industrial recovery of independent Mexico. After studying abroad in England, he founded the Agricultural and Pastoral Bank in Mexico. From 1823, as Minister of the Interior and Foreign Affairs, he established the National Archives and National Museum, and built a foundation for education and literature. In the 1830s, he persistently represented the national interest in drawing the border between the United States and Mexico, and strengthened friendly relations with Latin American countries in order to counter the United States.

メキシコの政治家，歴史家。鉱物学を専攻した後，1814年にはスペインに渡りドイツ，フランスで専門分野を深めた。スペインではメキシコ鉱山業の衰退過程と原因に関する著作を出版。これは独立国メキシコの産業復興に大きな影響を与えた。さらにイギリスへ留学後は本国で農牧融資銀行を創設した。23年以降は内務･外務大臣として国立文書館や博物館などを創立し，教育･文芸の基盤を作り上げる一方，30年代にはアメリカ･メキシコ両国間の国境線の設定にあたり，執拗（しつよう）に国益を代弁し，アメリカへの対抗上ラテン･アメリカ諸国との友好関係を緊密化した。
