Italian thinker. In 1818, amid the reactionary situation under the Vienna system, he founded the newspaper Il conciliatore in Milan, which was under Austrian rule, and played a leading role in the Romantic cultural movement. The newspaper was banned the following year due to its nationalistic and liberal tendencies. In 1820, his ties to the secret society Carbonari Party were revealed, and he was sentenced to death during the great persecution. His sentence was later commuted, and he spent the rest of his life in Spielberg Prison until 1830. After his release in 1832, he published Le mie prigioni, a book written in prison, which caused a great stir throughout Italy and Europe, conveying the miserable conditions of Italian patriots under the rule of foreign nations.

イタリアの思想家。1818年ウィーン体制下の反動的状況のなか，オーストリア統治下のミラノで《調停者Il conciliatore》紙を創刊，ロマン主義的文化運動のリーダーの役割を果たす。この新聞はその民族主義･自由主義的傾向を理由に翌年発行を禁止される。20年秘密結社カルボナリ党との関係が明らかにされ，大弾圧のなかで死刑判決を受ける。その後減刑され，30年までシュピールベルク監獄で過ごす。釈放後32年に《獄中記Le mie prigioni》を発表し，異民族支配下のイタリア人愛国者がおかれている悲惨な状態を全イタリア，ヨーロッパに伝えて大きな反響を引き起こす。
