Roncevaux in French. A village in the province of Navarre, Basque Country, northern Spain. It is located in the Pyrenees, northeast of the provincial capital Pamplona, ​​at an altitude of 981m. The Roncesvalles Pass, also known as Ibañeta Pass (1177m) over the Pyrenees, is famous as the place where Charles the Great's general, Roland, died in battle against the Saracens in 788 (see Song of Roland). Population 35 (1991 estimate).
