A city in the northeast of Tasmania, Australia. It is located 65 km upstream from the mouth of the long, narrow inlet-like Tama River. It is the central city in the north of the state. It was founded in 1806 as the state's second settlement after Hobart. It is a distribution and processing center for agricultural produce, fruit, and dairy products produced in the Tama River basin to the north, and has a variety of industries including woolen textiles and automobiles. As the main port in the north, it exports wood chips overseas, and has a particularly large trade with Melbourne. There is an aluminum smelter and a wood chip factory in Bell Bay on the right bank of the downstream Tama River. Population: 62,506 (1991 estimate).
