The competition was founded in 1943 by two renowned French performers, pianist Ron and violinist Thibaud. The first three competitions were held every three years, but later changed to a biennial cycle and continue to this day. Two categories are always held, the piano and the violin, which are the founders' specialties. The prizes vary slightly from year to year, but are decided up to about the eighth place, and the first, second and third places each receive a Grand Prix. Major winners of the Grand Prix include S. Francois (1943) and A. Ciccolini (1949) for piano, and M. Auclair (1943) and B. Gutnikov (1957) for violin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
