Also known as the Royal Institution, it was the first scientific research and educational institution in the UK. It was founded in 1799 through the efforts of Royal Society members at the suggestion of Rumford, and received royal charter in 1800. Initially, there were three professorships: physics, chemistry, and physiology. The background to the establishment of this institution is said to be the hope of progressive landowners for applied science (for example, improvements in agricultural techniques) who feared the growing social unrest that accompanied the progress of the Industrial Revolution. For this reason, from the beginning, the institution placed emphasis on educational activities such as various publications and lectures aimed at the general public, and held general lectures every Friday.
