Royal antelope

Japanese: ローヤルアンテロープ（英語表記）royal antelope

A mammal of the bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla (illustration). A very small antelope that lives in the forests of Africa from Sierra Leone to Ghana. This species is about the size of a rabbit and is not only the smallest of all antelopes, but also the smallest of all ungulates. The English name "royal" comes from the fact that locals called this species the king of rabbits. Its limbs are long and slender, and its hips are higher than its shoulders. Its body color is dark brown on the back, reddish brown on the sides, and white on the inside of its limbs and underside. The horns, which only males have, are small and measure 1-2.5 cm in length.

偶蹄目ウシ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。アフリカのシエラレオネからガーナにかけての森林にすむ，ごく小型のアンテロープ。ほぼウサギ大の本種はアンテロープ中もっとも小型であるばかりでなく，有蹄類中の最小種である。英名のroyalは，現地人が本種をウサギの王さまと呼んでいたことによる。四肢は細長く，腰が肩よりも高い。体色は体の背面が暗褐色，側面は赤褐色，四肢の内側と腹側が白色。雄にのみある角は小さく，長さ1～2.5cm。
