Snowflake - Suno-fure-ku (English spelling) snowflake

A bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae) that is planted in the fall. It is also called giant snowdrop or lily of the valley daffodil. The bulb is 2.5-4 cm in diameter. The leaves are glossy green and slender, 30-40 cm long. From late April to early May, 4-8 bell-shaped white flowers, 1-2 cm in diameter, similar to lily of the valley, bloom downward on a 30-40 cm flower stalk. Native to the Mediterranean coast. The horticultural variety, Gravity Giant, has large, sturdy flowers.

Other varieties include L. vernum L. and Acis autumnalis (L.) Sweet ( L. autumnale L.). Although Acis autumnalis is weak to cold, other varieties are cold-resistant and can be left planted for 2-3 years. Plant in September or October. They grow well in somewhat humid places.

ヒガンバナ科（APG分類：ヒガンバナ科）の秋植え球根草。オオマツユキソウ、スズランズイセンともいう。鱗茎(りんけい)は径2.5～4センチメートル。葉は光沢のある緑色を呈して細長く、30～40センチメートル。4月下旬～5月上旬、30～40センチメートルの花茎に釣鐘状でスズランに似た径1～2センチメートルの白色花を4～8個、下向きに開く。地中海沿岸原産。園芸品種のグレビティジャイアントは、花は大きくじょうぶである。

　ほかにウェルヌムL. vernum L.やアキザキスノーフレークAcis autumnalis (L.) Sweet（L. autumnale L.）がある。アキザキスノーフレークは寒さに弱いが、ほかの品種は耐寒性があり、2～3年植えたままでよい。植え付けは9～10月。いくぶん湿気の多い所でよく育つ。
