Born: July 16, 1714, Angoulême [Died] March 29, 1800. Paris. A French soldier, pioneer and designer of fortification technology. Famous for developing a new system of field fortifications. Joined the French army in 1732. Served in the War of Polish Succession and the War of Austrian Succession. Later, fascinated by S. Vauban's "General Siege Art", he became absorbed in building fortifications. Served as a general and French military commissioner in the Seven Years' War. Built field fortifications on the Île de Orléans and the Île de Aix. The fortifications he designed were called "polygonal" fortifications, and completely changed the conventional concept of fortifications by strengthening their defenses with overwhelming firepower. They were kept secret for 15 years until the publication of his main work, "La Fortification perpendiculaire" (1776-78). Promoted to division commander in 1792. Montalembert |
