A mammal of the genus Equus and family Equidae in the order Perissodactyla. It resembles a horse but is smaller, with noticeably small hooves and long ears. Its tail has long hair only on the tip half. It stands 0.9-1.5m at the shoulder and weighs around 260kg, except for the Can, which weighs over 350kg. Its body color is pale yellow or pale gray to reddish brown, and its mane and tail are black-brown. It has a black line running down its back. Wild species include the African wild ass Equus asinus (subspecies include the Nubian wild ass E. a . africanus (illustration) and the Somali wild ass E. a . somalicus ), which lives in North Africa and parts of East Africa, and the Asian wild ass E. hemionus (subspecies include the Kulan and Can), which lives in Mongolia, Tibet, and Syria.
