A technique in Western music. It is a technique for moving quickly from one note to another by gliding. The movement is very smooth and gradual, and the intermediate pitches cannot be heard. For this reason, portamento is used only with bowed string instruments, human voice, and instruments such as the trombone. With the piano, harp, and wind instruments other than the trombone, only movements within the scale can be made, and this transition is called glissando. In theory, portamento can be either ascending or descending, but in practice ascending is more commonly used. Similar techniques are widely seen in the Orient, such as Chinese and Japanese singing, plucked string instruments such as the koto and sitar, and air-sounding instruments such as the shakuhachi.
