Rocky Mountains - Rocky
A mountain range that runs north to south through western North America. It is about 4,500 km long, and together with the Andes, it forms the Cordillera mountain range. It was formed by Tertiary orogeny. The northern part is connected to the Alaska Range, and the southern part is connected to the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. The part within Canada is called the Canadian Rockies, and the northern part is a wavy plateau, while the southern part is a steep mountain range, with high peaks such as Mount Robson (3,954 m). The part within the United States is wide, divided into many branches, and forms many intermountain basins. The highest peak is Mount Elbert (4,398 m) in Colorado. There are many scenic spots such as glaciers, volcanoes, canyons, and forests, and there are Jasper National Park and Banff National Park in Canada, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and other national parks in the United States. The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1984 and 1990, and Yellowstone and other mountains in the United States have also been registered as World Heritage Sites.

北米西部を南北に縦走する山脈。全長約4500kmに及び,アンデス山脈などとともにコルディレラ山系を形成する。第三紀造山運動によって形成された。北部はアラスカ山脈に,南部はメキシコのシエラ・マドレ山脈に連なる。カナダ領内の部分はカナディアン・ロッキーと呼ばれ,その北部は波状の台地,南部は急峻な山地で,ロブソン山(3954m)などの高峰がある。米国領内の部分は幅が広く,多くの支脈に分かれ,多数の山間盆地を形成。最高峰はコロラド州のエルバート山(4398m)。氷河,火山,峡谷,森林などの景勝地が多く,カナダのジャスパー国立公園,バンフ国立公園,米国のグレーシャー国立公園,イエローストーン国立公園,グランド・ティートン国立公園,ロッキー山岳国立公園その他の国立公園がある。カナディアン・ロッキー山脈公園群は1984年と1990年世界自然遺産に登録,米国でもイエローストーンなどが世界遺産に登録された。
