Located in the eastern part of Yamagata Prefecture, bordering Yamagata City to the north, the city occupies the central Yamagata Basin and the eastern mountain range. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. Tendo, the center of the city, has a long, narrow shopping street along National Route 13, and the Ou Main Line passes through it, with National Route 48 branching off from it. Tendo Onsen (gypsum spring, 66°C) springs up in the middle of the rice paddies, and there are many inns. There are extensive rice paddies and orchards in the surrounding area, and the city produces a lot of fruits such as apples, grapes, peaches, and cherries, as well as vegetables, tobacco, and hops. The manufacture of agricultural equipment and furniture is also thriving. The city produces 96% of the country's specialty shogi pieces, and there is a shogi museum, and the city attracts tourists with events such as human shogi at the end of April.
