Chelate

Also called a chelate compound. A compound in which a polydentate ligand is coordinated to a central atom. Originally, the name was used for compounds in which a bidentate ligand coordinates in such a way that it sandwiches the metal atom, such as ethylenediamine, but now it is also used widely for polydentate ligands. "Chelate" means "crab's claws" in Greek. A heterocycle formed by a metal atom and a polydentate ligand is called a chelate ring, and the phenomenon of forming a chelate ring is called chelation.

キレート化合物ともいう．多座配位子が中心原子に配位した化合物．本来，エチレンジアミンのように金属原子をはさみ込むような形で配位する二座配位子の配位した化合物に用いられた名称であったが，現在では，広く多座配位子の場合にも用いられている．キレートとはギリシア語で“カニのはさみ”の意味である．金属原子と多座配位子とから形成される複素環をキレート環，キレート環を形成する現象をキレート化という．
