Laxness, Halldór Kiljan
Born: April 23, 1902 in Reykjavik, Iceland
[Died] February 8, 1998. Born in the suburbs of Reykjavik, Iceland. An Icelandic novelist. At the age of 17, he wrote his debut novel, Barn náttúrunnar (1919), Son of Nature. He traveled around the world, and converted to Catholicism in Luxembourg, but spent three years in the United States, where he became a socialist toward the end of his stay, and became politically active. He produced a series of masterpieces that were based on the lives of oppressed farmers and fishermen, and were full of sharp satire, inheriting the traditions of the old sagas. His representative works include Salka Valka (1931-32) and Sjálfstætt fólk (34-35), as well as the historical novel Íslandsklukkan (43-46). He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1952 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955. He is also active in the fields of short stories, plays, poetry, and criticism.
