Rossetti, Dante Gabriel

Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
Born: May 12, 1828, London
[Died] April 9, 1882, Birchington-on-Sea British poet and painter. The eldest of the Rossetti siblings. Born to Italian refugee G. Rossetti, he studied at art school and was taught by FM Brown. In 1848, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite movement and played an active role as a central figure. In the 1950s, he produced watercolors and drawings on themes of mythology and the Bible, and his decorative and mystical paintings had a great influence on fin de siècle Symbolism and Art Nouveau. In addition to painting, he also started writing poetry early on, and his style was characterized by passion, color, and medieval themes and atmosphere, pioneering a realm of poetry that was both mystical and sensual. The sonnet series "The House of Life" included in a collection of poems in 1970 is a powerful work that explores the relationship between spirit and flesh in love, but his overly sensual style of poetry earned him the nickname "carnal." Other works include Ballads and Sonnets (81).

Rossetti, Christina Georgina

Born: December 5, 1830, London
[Died] December 29, 1894, London. British female poet. The youngest of the Rossetti siblings. Her first collection of poems, Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), showed a Pre-Raphaelite style, and she later published Prince's Progress (66), Sing-Song: a Nursery Rhyme Book (72), New Poems (96), and others. Her refined vocabulary, reliable meter, and gentle emotion create a mystical and religious atmosphere in her poetry, and she also shares a sense of color and medieval elements with her elder brother, DG Rossetti, making her one of the best female poets in England. She gave up marriage twice in her life for religious reasons, and many of her love poems are records of failure in love.

Pascoli and others. His other works include Versi (47), which has a flowing rhythm and colorful imagery reminiscent of the Arcadian school.
