A general term for birds of the Muscicapinae subfamily of the family Muscicapidae in the order Passeriformes. One of the characteristics of Muscicapinae is that they perch on a branch, and when they spot a flying fly or horsefly, they fly off to catch it and then return to their original position. Therefore, this feeding method is often called the "muscicapina feeding method." The etymology of the word "muscicapina" is said to be "fire-beating" or "fire-kindling," and many Muscicapina species make sounds that sound like the sound of hitting a flint, such as "hihihi," "pippi," and "katakatara." スズメ目ヒタキ科ヒタキ亜科Muscicapinaeの鳥の総称。ヒタキ類の特徴の一つとして,枝に止まっていて,飛んでいるハエやアブなどを見つけると飛びたってつかまえ,またもとの位置に戻る習性がある。したがって,この採食法をしばしば〈ヒタキ型採食法〉と呼ぶ。ヒタキの語源は〈火叩き〉または〈火焚き〉といわれ,ヒタキ類の多くは火打石をたたきあわせる音に似たヒッヒッ,ピッピッ,カタカタという声をよく出すことによる。
