Mandarin duck (mandarin duck)

Japanese: オシドリ(鴛鴦) - オシドリ(英語表記)mandarin duck
Mandarin duck (mandarin duck)
A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). Males are about 48cm long, females about 41cm long. They are found in northeastern China, Primorsky Krai, Sakhalin, Japan, etc., and those that breed in cold regions spend the winter in eastern China and Taiwan. They have also been released in parts of Europe, where they breed naturally. In Japan, they are found throughout the country as resident or migratory birds, living in lakes, marshes, and rivers in mountainous areas surrounded by forests. They nest in hollows of large trees and lay 7-12 eggs per clutch between June and August. When the chicks hatch, they follow their parents down to the water and are raised by the female.
