This is a Buddhist ceremony in which the eight volumes of the Lotus Sutra are lectured and praised, one volume at a time, over eight sessions, starting from the first volume. It is also called "Hakko" for short. It is said to have originated in China, but in Japan it was first held in 796, when Kinso of Sekibuchi-ji Temple in Nara lectured on the Lotus Sutra for four days. After that, it was held at the Imperial Court and the Shogunate as a memorial service for the deceased.
