Marignolli - Marinori (English spelling) Giovanni de Marignolli

A Franciscan friar from the distinguished Marignoli family of Florence, Italy. In 1338, he was sent to the Yuan Dynasty as an envoy of the Pope. He traveled overland via Almarik in Central Asia and arrived in the Yuan capital of Dadu (Beijing) in 1342, where he met with Togon Temur, the last emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, and presented him with a fine horse. After a short stay in Dadu, he set off by sea at the end of 1345, arriving in Avignon in 1354. He was later commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV to re-edit the Bohemian Annals, and worked on the task in Prague. In the book, Marignoli wove stories about China and India that he had seen during his travels to the East.

イタリア、フィレンツェの名門マリニョリ家出身のフランチェスコ会修道士。1338年、ローマ教皇の使節として元朝に派遣された。陸路により中央アジアのアルマリクを経由し、1342年に元朝の首都大都（北京(ペキン)）に到着し、元朝最後の皇帝順帝トゴンテムルに謁して、名馬を献じた。しばらく大都に滞在したのち、1345年末、海路により帰途につき、1354年にアビニョンに帰着した。のち、神聖ローマ皇帝カール4世より『ボヘミア年代記』の新たな編集を依嘱され、プラハでその仕事に従事した。マリニョリはその書中に、東方旅行で自らの見聞した中国やインドのことなどを織り込んだのである。
