A Franciscan friar from the distinguished Marignoli family of Florence, Italy. In 1338, he was sent to the Yuan Dynasty as an envoy of the Pope. He traveled overland via Almarik in Central Asia and arrived in the Yuan capital of Dadu (Beijing) in 1342, where he met with Togon Temur, the last emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, and presented him with a fine horse. After a short stay in Dadu, he set off by sea at the end of 1345, arriving in Avignon in 1354. He was later commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV to re-edit the Bohemian Annals, and worked on the task in Prague. In the book, Marignoli wove stories about China and India that he had seen during his travels to the East.
