In 1957, an oil field was discovered in the vicinity of Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco state in southern Mexico, with an oil layer in the Miocene sandstone of the Tertiary period. Later, with the advancement of drilling technology, deeper drilling began in 1971, and the following year, two exploratory wells succeeded in discovering a Cretaceous (and partly Jurassic) limestone oil layer. The Reforma oil field is the collective name for the 25 oil fields producing from this layer, a group of super-giant oil fields with an oil production area of 70 km x 100 km. The ultimate recoverable reserves of the Reforma oil field are not very accurate, but are estimated to be more than 7 billion barrels. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
