Rosetta Stone

Japanese: ロゼッタ･ストーン（英語表記）Rosetta Stone

This basalt stone stele provided an important clue in deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. It was discovered in August 1799 during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign near the town of Rosetta (Rashid in Arabic) at the mouth of the Nile, hence the name. It is currently housed at the British Museum. The top, middle and bottom sections are inscribed with the same text (a decree of the priesthood praising Ptolemy V) in hieroglyphics (hieroglyphic script), demotic (a demotic script, an abbreviated form of hieroglyphics), and Greek.

古代エジプトの象形文字の解読に重要な手がかりとなった玄武岩製石碑。ナポレオンのエジプト遠征のおり，1799年8月，ナイルの一河口の町ロゼッタ(アラビア語ではラシード)の近くで発見されたのでこの名がある。現在大英博物館所蔵。上段，中段，下段にヒエログリフ(聖刻文字)，デモティック(民衆文字。ヒエログリフの略書体)，ギリシア文字で同一の内容の文(プトレマイオス5世をたたえる神官団の布告)が刻まれている。
