Acre - E-kaa (English spelling) acre

A unit of land area in the imperial system. It is 4,840 square yards, which is about 40.469 ares, or about 4 tan in Japanese. Its origins are from the Latin ager, meaning "yoke." It is said to have started as the area that one cow could plow in half a day, or the area that could be plowed in one day. The size was not consistent depending on the country or region, but it was unified to the current value during the reign of King Edward I of England (reigned 1272-1307).

ヤード・ポンド法の土地の面積単位。4840平方ヤードで、約40.469アール、日本の約4反にあたる。ラテン語の「くびき」を意味するagerを語源とする。ウシ1頭が半日で耕す面積、あるいは1日で耕す面積に始まったといわれる。国や地域により大きさが一定しなかったが、イギリス国王エドワード1世（在位1272～1307）のとき現在の値に統一されたという。
