A nuclear research city in north-central New Mexico, USA. Population 11,000 (1990). It is located 38 km northwest of Santa Fe, on a plateau at an altitude of 2,225 m. In 1942, the federal government established an atomic research laboratory based on the Manhattan Project, and in July 1945, the world's first atomic bomb was successfully tested in the desert northwest of Alamogordo. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were also manufactured here. After the war, it became the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, where cutting-edge research in nuclear physics, medicine, biology, and other fields is conducted, and the city is mainly home to the laboratory staff. アメリカ合衆国ニューメキシコ州中北部の原子力関係の研究都市。人口1万1000(1990)。サンタ・フェの北西38km,標高2225mの高原上にある。1942年マンハッタン計画に基づき連邦政府により原子力研究所が創設され,45年7月アラモゴード北西部の砂漠で世界最初の原子爆弾の実験に成功した。広島,長崎に投下された爆弾もここで製造された。戦後はロス・アラモス科学研究所として,原子核物理学,医療,生物学などの先端的研究が進められており,同市にはおもに研究所のスタッフが居住する。
