Born: July 5, 1853, Bishop's Stortford [Died] March 26, 1902, Meisenberg, Cape Colony. South African politician of British origin. One of the most important colonial pioneers in the history of the 19th century British Empire. Born as the fifth son of the Reverend F. Rhodes. Moved to South Africa in 1870. After graduating from Oxford University, he became a member of the Cape Colony Parliament in 1881. In 1889, Queen Victoria granted him a charter to establish the British South Africa Company to develop the region that would later be named Rhodesia (today's Zambia and Zimbabwe) after Rhodes. During that time, he obtained financial support from the Rothschild family and forced the acquisition and annexation of diamond mines, and also succeeded in annexing the gold mines of the Transvaal, making him enormously wealthy (→ De Beers Consolidated Mines). In 1890, he became Prime Minister of the Cape Colony. During his term, he devoted himself to education, agricultural promotion, indigenous policy, and railway development, but in foreign affairs he took extraordinary measures known as the Jameson Invasion, with the aim of annexing the Transvaal Republic to the Union of South Africa, centered on the Cape Colony, and was forced to resign as Prime Minister in 1896. He then went to Rhodesia as a private citizen and devoted himself to the development of the area. He died in the Cape Colony. In his will, the majority of his estate, 6 million pounds, was donated to various public works projects. One of his most important projects was the Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University.
