A type of pair of kettle-shaped drums. Usually made of wood or metal, the body is covered in leather and fastened with a leather strap. One is for high notes and the other for low notes. It is characterized by the use of two sticks and the detailed and complex rhythms it produces. It is used in religious and military music. Similar instruments are widely distributed, mainly in Islamic cultural spheres, and the names and shapes of the instruments vary depending on the region. For example, there is the naqqārā in the Rajasthan region of India, and the nakarazen used in Turkish military music. In the 13th century, it was introduced to Europe under the names naker and nacaires, and became the prototype of the timpani.
