A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). A member of the mugwort family, the entire plant is densely covered in silvery-white silky hairs. The Japanese name is an analogy to morning mist. The stems are about 30 cm tall, and the upper part branches into inflorescences. The leaves are bipinnate and entirely lobed. The lobes are thin and about 1 mm wide. From July to September, flower heads about 5 mm in diameter bloom. The flower heads are made up of many small flowers. They grow in mountainous areas and on rocky coasts, and are found along the Sea of ​​Japan coast from central Honshu northwards, in Hokkaido, the southern Kuril Islands, and Sakhalin.

キク科(APG分類:キク科)の多年草。ヨモギの仲間で、全草が銀白色の絹毛で密に覆われている。和名はこれを朝霧に例えたもの。茎は高さ30センチメートル程度、上部は分枝して花序となる。葉は2回羽状に全裂。裂片の幅は細く1ミリメートルほど。7~9月、径5ミリメートルほどの頭花を開く。頭花は多数の小花からなる。山地や海岸の岩場に生え、本州中部以北の日本海沿岸、北海道、南千島、樺太(からふと)(サハリン)に分布する。
