For example, the subtidal to supratidal zones of the Persian Gulf and Shark Bay in Australia are divided into zones by stromatolites of characteristic shapes, and the upper intertidal zone, where algal mats are particularly well developed, is subdivided into three or four zones. The sediments of the supratidal zone of the Persian Gulf are called sabkha in Arabic, which means salt flat (flat land formed after salt water temporarily evaporates and dries up), and the algal mats from the time when they were intertidal zones can be traced continuously several tens of centimeters below the surface. On the other hand, there is also an opinion that the diversity of forms is due to differences in the types of algae, and based on this idea, there have been attempts to use them as index fossils of Precambrian strata to compare continents.
