A cave passage in the Ao district of Sogi, Hon'yabakei-machi, Nakatsu City, northern Oita Prefecture. Before excavation by the monk Zenkai in the mid-18th century, this area was a dangerous place with a chain crossing over the Yamakuni River, and there was a constant stream of people losing their feet and losing their lives. Unable to bear this, Zenkai decided to excavate a cave entrance, and despite the ridicule of the villagers, he worked on the mountain of agglomerate rock for 30 years before finally completing it. This story is famously told in Kikuchi Kan's "Beyond Gratitude and Enmity." However, according to Furukawa Koshoken's "Saiyu Zakki" (Miscellaneous Notes on Travels to the West), who passed through this area in 1783 (Tenmei 3), Zenkai enlightened the surrounding areas, hired stonemasons, and dug a tunnel -- 120 ken (about 220 meters) to the east, 1 jō (about 3 meters) high, 9 shaku (about 2.7 meters) wide, and about 3 ken (about 5.5 meters) to the west -- with skylights here and there. After completion, he collected a toll of 4 mon for people and 8 mon for cattle and horses, and collected more than 100 ryo. In 1906 (Meiji 39), the road was widened to accommodate the Kokura Field Artillery Corps heading to Hijudai. The skylights and a few remnants of the original road remain, and a 360-meter stretch has been designated as a prefectural historic site. It was designated as National Route 212, but a new road has been built on the opposite bank. The Yabakei Scenic Museum is nearby. 30 minutes by bus from Nakatsu Station on the JR Nippon Main Line.
