Indian linden tree

Japanese:
Indian linden tree

An evergreen tree of the family Moraceae (APG classification: Moraceae). It is also called the Tenjiku Bodaiju (Indian Bodhi Tree). Native to India and Sri Lanka. The leaves are leathery and smooth, with long stalks and elongated tail-like tips. The fig-like cryptocarps are about 1.5 cm in diameter and ripen to a dark purple color. It was introduced to Japan in the mid-Meiji period and is cultivated in greenhouses as an ornamental plant. It is somewhat cold-resistant and can survive winters at temperatures between 4°C and -1°C. It is propagated by cuttings. It is famous for being the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Note that what is commonly called the Bodaiju (German name Lindenbaum) is a different species, and is a deciduous tree of the family Tilia (APG classification: Malvaceae) native to China, and a hybrid of this and a closely related species.
