A perennial plant of the lily family (illustration) that commonly grows in sunny grasslands. It is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but is known only from southern Sakhalin outside of Japan, making it a semi-endemic species of Japan. The flower stalk is 15-55 cm tall and often sparsely branched. In July and August, numerous white flowers bloom in somewhat dense racemes. The basal leaves are very similar to those of Japanese lily, so it is easy to mistake them for Japanese lily when there are no flowers. The plant body of the Japanese lily contains a saponin called methanin, which is used for medicinal purposes. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
